 I would suggest looking for a property in Gaydon. Lovely area, although a bit pricey. Would suit you down to a tee, as the place name suggests:beer:0

Your insights are always appreciated Damo. Gaydon is all well and good but I'd much rather live near Slack Bottom like you!0

Why are you looking for a cottage anyway? I thought that you'd given up cottaging!

I was going to suggest the one in Emborough.
There's also this one in Green Ore which is on a direct bus route to Bristol

http://www.jillmeadows.co.uk/ is the letting agent. I know a few people that have rented from her & have had no problems. If you search by the number of bedrooms needed it's easier than using the location or anything ;-)

OP is there a local free paper to the areas you like? If so put an advert in the property to rent section saying wanted with a brief outline of must have points ie 2 bed with garden that way potential and current LL's can contact you.0

There is a certain sort of property management company - think Savills, Cluttons, Strutt and Parker, Smiths Gore, Bidwells and other smaller localised versions that I don't know of (I'm from 'oop north!) that do something called Estate Management.
This means they look after country estates (think large house/stately home with woods, farms and lots of old cottages!) Get onto these guys find out who manages the estates local to where you want to be.
N.B. there may be a waiting list and there is likely to be plenty of competition for the sort of property you are interested in - they don't come up very often as they tend to be long term rentals! On the plus side once you're in there there is generally a very low risk of the estate wanting the house back!0 -
Have you tried looking at the holiday lets? You wont loose anything by offering yourself as a long term tenant, whats the worst that can happen - they say no.

Have you looked on this site which seems to cover mainly in the South West?A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.0 -
Thanks for all of your help. Have just moved to Westbury on Trym. Managed to find a 3 bedroom house with big rooms for £900, with no agency :j
Owners have let us move in and give a post dated cheque for deposit until we get our last deposit back.
The next big issue, the house has fleas! The owners asked us to look after some cats for 4 weeks before they get picked up, they were riddled so they are now living in the shed. Everyday is a flea battle though! Trying to keep laughing about it, and I now really appreciate the power of the Dyson!

Westbury-O-T is pretend-rural, but 'nice' and very convenient. When you live in an area like that there are usually some down-sides to affordability.
In Bath, we had issues with the old-ladyish house we rented, mainly because it was set up with a heating system intended to create hypothermia and an hour long documentary about the old being taken advantage of by money-grabbing energy companies. Believe me, fleas are a doddle compared with frostbite.;)0
