Personally i wouldnt travel 4 hours to Whipsnade.
Although it is a 'decent' day out, it is far from spectacular and also on the expensive side to get in. Its not the cash, its the value for money and there isn't much value in it thats all.
Also, if it rains, it is one of the grimmest days out i can imagine.
I would however recommend Woburn.
Better day out all round.0 -
There are actually direct trains on this route to Hemel and Berkhamsted, both of which have transport links to Whipsnade (I live in Berko).
Also, on the day the OP wants to travel, Southern are not running any trains north of Watford Junction, don't know why, do you? So a further change will be needed at Watford Junc.0 -

The OP is travelling on public transport and you need your own car to get round the Safari Drive bit of Woburn, which is hideously busy in summer, took us 2 hours to drive round in nose to tail traffic. And its even further away than Whipsnade.
I dont know why the OP has decided on Whipsnade but would suggest they save it for a time when they can get there by car. I personally like Whipsnade but wouldnt do a 8 hr round trip in a day to go.0 -

Not true.
1. There is the lorry safari for £3.50pp
2. I was in Woburn last Saturday and it was busy but fine to get around.
3. Woburn is a little further but far easier to get to0 -
You are so lucky.... I was at Whipsnade end of June and saw Kaylee, one of the elephants who was very heavily pregnant at the time.... well you will be so lucky if you go for the bank holiday as you will see her little baby, she is only weeks old and apparently doing well.... watch her on this video.... she almost falls asleep standing up!
I am going to try and get to see her in September. But make sure you get a discount voucher either with a rail ticket
