Age limit on credit card?

in Credit cards
Hello peeps,
I'm new to this site and this is my first question.
My 19 year old son (he'll be 20 next week!) applied for a Virgin credit card but was refused. He currently has a Barclaycard and wants to transfer the balance because he is paying too much interest each month. His history with B'card is good and he keeps his bank account in good order. He lives at home with me so his outgoings are minimal, he is in full-time employment and earns good money for his age. Could it be his age that is against him?
Any thoughts/advice on this would be great, thank you!

is his bank account with barclays? if so they also use internal scoring for barclaycard as i cant get cards with people but barclaycard gave me a card with a 2k limit as my account is run perfectly0

Income plus existing debt are likely to be the most important factors assuming he all his payments are on time etc.
but if his outgoings are minimal and he earns a good income for his age why is he in debt?0 -
Is he on the electoral roll?
Is the Barclaycard maxed out?
If the Barclaycard was 'lumped' in with a Barclays current account, and neither are being reported to the CRAs, it could be that no-one will give him a card yet.
Could simply be a credit scoring thing, in that no one thing (ie his age) is stopping MBNA from granting a card...instead, when they look at the full picture he simply isn't a good prospect for them.
Has he looked at his credit report?
If he's only 19 and already has a revolving interest bearing balance, is he (or has he been) living beyond his means? Maybe you should have a chat with him?0 -
Being 19 shouldn't be the problem. I had 2 credit cards when I was 19 and a substantial overdraft. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
