I was sent an ESA cheque by DWP and need to cash it
According to the back of the cheque - this can be done at a Post Office - so I took the cheque to my local PO along with I.D
Only to be told that they couldn't cash it - it did not have their ID number on it and I needed to contact DWP to ask which P.O. to cash it at
I emailed and received a reply at 5pm today - telling me that the cheque could be cashed at a my local P.O. - the name being totally different to the actual name - ie) Twinkle Toes PO - Rather than Pringles Road PO -
The name of the road is correct - as is the Post Code
Typical DWP !!!! up

What can I do ?
I will take the email with me in the morning to show the P.O but doubt whether they will cash the cheque...

You could try, but PO is not oblige to pay you if they have valid reason.

You could ask DWP to pay into a post office card account using direct payment.
    Spend smart, and save more.

Could DWP pay this direct into any bank account by BACS.
  • I don't understand what the OP means.

We've got a PO near us ... the locals have two names for it and the DWP have a third ... is that what you mean ? The 7 digit PO identifier code obviously covers all three different names.

If the giro is made out to another post office altogether, can't you cash it there instead ? Or is it too far away ?

Alternatives include paying it into your bank account, returning the giro to the DWP for replacement with the PO of your choice or returning it for a same day payment to your bank account (if applicable).

If desperate you can cash it at a cheque centre. But they'll obviously charge you for the privilege.
  • As the payments will normally be paid into a bank account cant you just pay the cheque into that account?

I cant see how this is the DWP's fault. When you nominate a post office all the processor can do is enter the PO Code that refers to that post office. This is then printed onto the giro so that the PO know it is for them. They should cash it if, as you say, it is the right address etc.

The code that is on the cheque IS my local P.O (according to DWP) - However the name is different - and the reason that I need to cash it rather than bank it is personal
Is there some on-line site with a database of codes and PO branches ?
The address is correct - the road and building number are correct
The name of the PO on the cheque is "almost" correct - but my local PO told me that the code is not theirs ...
Incidentally - when I originally signed on - I nominated my local PO using the correct name

I dont think there is an online database - its an internal DWP thing.
