    if the screen just needs replacing then they will just replace the screen, however if the hard drive and motherboard is damaged also they might deem it uneconomical to repair it and just give you a replacement one for the price you paid for yours

    The screen isn't physically damaged it just doesn't come on though you can hear that the machine is on.
    Some people see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty - the enlightened are simply grateful to have a glass :)

    If it's booting up OK then it's probably just the inverter, Why don't you plug it into another monitor, if you can get a display then it's just a screen fault and the mobo and hard drive are OK. Then take it to a laptop specialist (not PCW!) and usually for about £20 they will give you a quote for repair. That will be offset against the repair cost if you then proceed.
    Or you can buy a cheap monitor (if it doesn't need to be mobile) and use it with that.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    We have tried it with a monitor but it didn't work :(

    Still not necessarily terminal, since it sounds like it's booting OK. Could just be the graphics output. So you'd need to take it in for a quote.
