Laptop purchase advice

I currently use a Dell Inspiron 5100, but it drives me bonkers as it overheats very quickly and I have to put a fan blowing directly on it to use it. I only use the laptop for surfing the net, but I find it very slow.
I would like to purchase a new laptop, and am willing to spend up to £500, can anyone make any recommendations for me?
I don't really download things much either, but I like to have a lot of tabs open at the same time.
Thanks in advance

Personally, i'd be buying this...
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N0054503&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756&acd=19d06030643cdf3a14980ca23b585b27
And saving the extra £150. Its all you need.0 -
Also check out https://www.dmxdimension.com and dont buy anything with 'celeron' in the processor name...0

Have you tried clearing dust from your vents? (Compressed air)My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -

Good idea! Also, to the O/P, check 'where' it overheats. My wife complained of her dell overheating and it turned out to be that the battery pack had reached end of life and it was it that was overheating. £25 for a new battery and all sorted.0 -
I would avoid Dell - I had very bad experience with their customer service.
Have you consider a netbook instead of a laptop?Anything in excess is bad for you including moderation0 -

I agree with this too, have the same laptop and can't fault it
their customer service is also excellent from my experience0 -
Sounds like all you need to do is clean out all the dust from the vents to stop it overheating. Are you using it on a hard surface so that the airflow is not restricted? Slowness can probably be cured by a defrag, run Disk Cleanup and run CCleaner, then upgrade your RAM. How much RAM do you currently have installed?
The Dell 5100 is a very sound laptop, should have some life in it yet if all you want to do is surf the net.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
