Hi :-)
Did a format, and did nothing different, but for some unknown reason, Nero's automatic aspi didn't install. Every time try any burning program, it tries to write lead-in, hear disk whirring loudly a few times, then error message (no details, except first message was that aspi not installed ... since installed aspi, but same errors ... and since installed aspi, mouse pointer seizes up sometimes when trying burn and the burning program seizes up when I try to close it, and only a reboot will solve things).
At a loss why this happening, as have done nothing different at all. And can't format because can't backup stuff!
Would much appreciate advice.
Best regards, Cat

Have you loaded in all necessary drivers?:idea:0

Have you looked in DEVICE MANAGER to see if there are any 'yellow exclamation' marks? If there ARE any then our definitely missing drivers
What have you reloaded? XP? Did you runa FULL format first or a 'quick' one? (Ive had bad experiences with 'quick' formats in the past):idea:0 -

Hiya :-) Yes, have checked and there aren't any yellow exclamation marks. Have reloaded xp pro after quick format. Just found and used forceaspi, which at least caused an attempted burn to go past failing at the 'lead-in' bit, but then it failed later on in the burn! Mystified, unless hardware on way out?

If your 100% sure everything else is ok then it does look like the drive. But personally id be tempted to backup what you need to a USB hardrive or whatever and go for a FULL format this time before concluding the drives knackered:idea:0

Have you tried IMGBURN to burn a disc? Ive found that can work where nero sometimes fails (And slow the burn speed down too):idea:0

It maybe a long shot but the cable that connects the drive to PSU could have come unplugged, i had a similar problem where i couldnt burn any discs, the disc wouldnt be read so i had a look inside and the plug from the PSU was unplugged0

Thanks aliEnRIK :-)
Just had a look on ebay for external hard drive and noticing 120gig ones for £26, so will sort out that in the next week or so, plus it'll save money I'd normally spend on disks and will be able to afford a new dvd drive if the one I have now does show to be on the way out!
Just tried imgburn, and it's not worked ... said 'writing sectors' but nothing showing up on the 'complete' bar ... then an I/O error, something about scsiStatus 0 x 02 and to check condition, interpretation is 'write error'. String of yellow exclamation 'command sequence errors'. Am I right in thinking this is to do with one of the lasers?
