A&L to Skipton BACS, how?

Hi I'd like some clarification on this. I've called skipton and confirmed the initial details but I'm not exactly sure and what to ensure I do it correctly.

I want to transfer money from my A&L current account to my Skipton Bond account online via BACS.

Skipton state
Please supply your product providers with the following information:
Barclays Bank, SKIPTON BUILDING SOCIETY account 70798924 sort code 20-78-42 quoting your savings account number.

So, if I add a new payee to A&L online account I can choose
"A person" or "Organization"

If I choose person, do I put my name or do I put Barclays, or do I put Skipton?

and then when A&L says "reference" do I put my actual skipton account number there and fill in the account number and sort code as it states in the skipton FAQ's

If anyone has successfully done this before, I'd appreciate then to break it down for me, don't want the money going missing (: Thanks

Well you are paying a person (yourself) so you choose Person - so you put your name in.

The "reference" is anything you want to add as the text for the transaction which will appear on your bank stantement (online transactions) etc.

You put your name in the payee and skipton account number in the reference bit.

I take it the skipton account number is not your normal 8 account number?

    No, it's 9 digit.

The A&L internal account numbers are 9 digits (or at least what shows on the web)
You just take the first digit off and and thats your regular account number(that will match your cheque book).

I know I have A&L account and ran into the same quandary.
So for instance if you see 612345678 on your A&L page, then your account number is the last eight digits 12345678.

The same logic probably for Skipton - just look at cheque book if you have one to confirm or credit card etc.

I appreciate everyones help but I think the poitn is being missed. I guess I really need someone who has performed a transfer from A&L to Skipton. I know how it works I'm just not sure how to process it. Skipton supply a generic account number ( 8 digits) and a sort code for all transfers, this is then sorted by quoting your 9 digit account number. I'm really looking how to quote the number with A&L hence the previous enquiry into "would it go into the reference box?" Along with that the "Name" issue, is it my name on my skipton account or the "Barclays Bank, Skipton Building Society"?

antispam246, all you need to do to create a Payee on the A&L account are the Skipton 8 digit account number and sort code.

Enter your name into the Payee field (its like paying yourself with a cheque - you right your name on the cheque, same with Payee name on the internet).

The Account number is always 8 digits, so use the one you have been given by Skipton. Sort code is straightforward 6 digits.

Reference is ANYTHING you want to type in to distingush a transaction - you can enter whatever text you want - I usually do something like BARC2HAL (Barclays to Halifax), or AL2BARC (Alliance & Leicester to Barclays).

    Its as simple as that.

And for good measure once the Payee is set up I usually do a small payment using the new Payee record for say £1. Allow 4 working days and make sure that it appears in the account you are sending to. That confirms all is ok - its just something I like to do - you do not need to.

I think this is incorrect. You cannot just put anything down as the Reference!

The account number and sort code are as Skipton have given you (70798924 and 20-78-42). This is not your account but a holding account therefore you MUST quote your savings account number (when A&L ask for a reference) or Skipton won't know who to credit it to. You may wish to put your name as the Payee.

    Slipthru's instructions will work fine.

Slipthru and kfm are correct. Please ignore OnceADay's advice to put "anything you like" in the reference field. That would only work if you were paying into an account with a unique account no., like a current account. It certainly wouldn't work for most building society accounts where the money has to go through a supporting bank (in Skipton's case, Barclays) first.

In your case, the sort code and account no. identify Skipton only. The same sort code and account no. will be used by every customer of Skipton (me included) to pay into their account. You MUST put your Skipton account no. in the reference field as it is the only way that Skipton will know whose account to allocate the money to.
