Recommended Vacuum Cleaner?

My wife and I don't seem to have a lot of luck with vacuum cleaners. We had some cheapo cylinder ones that were okay when we were renting and un-married. When we got hitched and bought our house we got a much hyped Dyson cylinder which was okay to start then broke down in stages and became a real pain, I hated it. We then bought a Hoover upright and that has also been an unmitigated disaster, very badly built, unreliable and flimsy. It's rubbish design drives me mad when using it, especially using the tools as the machine just falls over.
So now we are on the look out for a decent cylinder or compact vacuum cleaner. Tough, reliable, quiet and practical are the key requirements. We don't want gadetry, plastic-fantastic fittings, etc.
We was kind of thinking about a NuMatic Henry?
Any other suggestions from experience? Recommendations?

you cant go wrong with a Henry
dont know if its still on offer in
B&Q but it was a good £20 cheaper
than a lot of places.
we are the same here our old Dyson is
sitting in the hall way we have been
through a whole array here and this
Henry is holding up well.
We have had builders in and they used one
for hoovering up small sized rubble & dust
so they must have very strong motors.:j:j:j0 -
We bought this one a few weeks ago. mainly as its a pet vacume, but a good allrounder.

Still on offer to.
1 point is that, the cylinder is very small and needs emptying after 1 run around a 3 debroom house with 2 cats.
Also has an adjustable motor so if you need to vacume late or quiter, as we do when our little one is sleeping you can turn the motor down, still works very well.0 -
We recently went through a spate of vac's. Bought a Hoover upright...took it back 2 weeks later, belt shredded. Then bought a cylinder 1 (can't remember the name but it was a well-known and reputable one). Took that back after a week, a rotary attachment for pet hair had jammed. Got fed up and bought a tesco cylinder one.....still going strong......a third of the price of the others.....does the job and adjustable motor speed so can quieten things down if late at night etc0

If you want quality buy Meile.
I have a TT5000 Cat and Dog which is excellent. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I've also heard good things of Miele, but our Henries have been doing good work for years. They're bomb-proof.0

Agree with all the Henry fans. I replaced an old Vax (the original model) which had had many, many years of hard punishment and find the Henry better - smaller to store and not quite as prone to falling over! But just like the Vax it will deal with anything, particularly if you are DIYer. I gave away a Dyson - can't see why some people seem to be so impressed with them!
They are a very good price for what they offer anyway, but there do seem to be some good deals knocking around at the moment on top of that.0 -
Another vote for Henry!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

I have both Miele and Sebo ( one upstairs one down) and both are very good. Had the Miele for around 13 years and the Sebo for 2 years.0

Thanks all for replies. I have been doing a lot of reading on the net and that Miele Pet one got fantastic 5-star reviews all over the place. Found the average price knocking £200 or over, but found one for £178 delivered. Called my local store to beat it. He done it for a few quid less but chucked in a pack of bags worth a tenner and had one in stock for collection, so we bought it.
The quality of build in comparison with our Hoover and the Dyson before it is visible. We have vacced most of the downstairs to try out its various functions and it certainly seems to live up to its reputation. £60 more than we was going to get a Henry for BUT it has a two-year guarantee and for another £30 that is extended for 10 years. Hopefully this will last us longer than the last two have.
Thanks again!
PS- We have a noisy but utterly indestructible vac for DIY and work jobs made by Earlex, does wet and dry and rubble but not the thing for the home!0
