As far as I am to believe, The reason for the burning of the recovery disk yourself was to save money. There is no other reason for it. If Westiefan managed to get dell to send him a copy of Windows XP with serial number then he has been extremely fortunate. Dell had told me They WOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES send out an XP disk as they have to pay money to microsoft each time they do this. This is the reason I stayed away from them.
You dont have to obtain a serial number for XP as it should be stuck somewhere on the laptop. If Westiefan got another seriel number then Dell made a big Booboo as now this can be installed on any computer you decide and doesnt have to be used on the one you bought. You could also re-install using the XP disk you got and the serial stuck to the laptop.
I have an ACER and the option for the backup stays after you burn the disk. Also with a little digging around in the system32 folder I got the option to do a recovery DVD (which resets my laptop to manufacturers specs) or just burn a copy of Windows XP home CD for clean installs.0 -
I think it depends who you speak to at Dell. I have read other threads here (can't quite remember which ones now) and a few people have phoned and had these disks sent to them.
I read somewhere on either the Dell website or in the 'help' forums linked to it, that the usual procedure was to burn this cd but if laptop didn't have the facility then you should phone them up and ask for one. The girl I spoke to couldn't have been more helpful. She asked for the Service Tag number from the bottom of the laptop. and that was it.0
