When your in your email account,should it have a padlock aong the bottom and the address start with https ?

Not always.. for example theres 2 log in methods for gmail..
one is http://mail.google.com and the other is https://....
unless you specify https going to https://www.gmail.com auto takes u to the http version which then has no padlock etc..

Sometimes it askes you for secure option ,sometimes it does not
Is it safe to use without padlock etc.

If you are ever worried, the best thing to do is manually retype the url into the address bar.
If you enter the address through the keyboard you won't be exploited to phishing where the correct url is a spoof page
The btinternet online email service is a web outlook program (at least for my btconnect address)... when i go to the btbroadband website and click on the link for email, it opens the web outlook client in an https:// screen...
