FREE Energy Monitor from Southern Electric

Hi Dr, why do you want an item that will use more electricity just to tell you how much you’re using?
Southern electrics cheapest tariff is their online one. You can't get a "free" monitor but you will save more than their Better plan tariff. That I think is common sense.:rotfl:0 -
Received mine from BG a month ago, unreliable!
A 20 watt low energy bulb, the Minim is telling me I am using 200watts!
A TV with a maximum 103 watt rating, (confirmed by the manual and a plug in monitor), tells me I am using 200 watts!
Over a certain number of days, the Minim informs of 226 kWh usage, however my digital electricity meter tells me that over the same days I have used 170 kWh!
33% difference? How accurate is the Minim?
I just found this thread while looking for the accuracy of the Minim because I have been suspicious.
With one PC and 1 bulb on, some stuff on standby and the usual heating bits, it is reading around 0.8 kWh.
I looked at the meter, it was turning once every 45 seconds (80 turns an hour). The meter turns at 200 revs per kWh, so the consumption was 0.4 kWh.
Something is very odd! The only thing I can think is that there is something different about my/our wiring that is upsetting things, I will investigate a bit more tomorrow before declaring it a pile of junk.0 -

Can't see how it reads 0.8, or similar, as the digits on the Minim are 0.00, with nothing switched on, so yours is either reading, 0.08 (80 watts),, or 0.80, (800 watts), turns out re their example on page 6 of the manual is a misprint and the readings are e.g. 1.20, = 1.2 kWh, or 1200 watts.
I e-mailed them, (email addy in manual), giving readings from the Minim and a plug in monitor of my own using known wattage rated appliances, after a few e-mails, they sent me out another one, which seems a lot closer to the appliances although not perfect.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
My Minim's currently reading 0.08kW (80W), with the Internet router, cable modem and fridge running, and the laptop on battery. To me, that sounds about right.
Even 400W sounds a bit high for the usage you're reporting.Debts (26.3% remaining) - CC/BARC: [strike]2058[/strike] 100.00 @0%; CC/MBNA: [strike]1877.75[/strike] 0.00; Loan/SLC: [strike]10000[/strike] 7901.84 @1.5%; Loan/Per: [strike]1500[/strike] 0.00; Loan/HX: [strike]15000[/strike] 0.00

Yes, well, it was varying between 0.76 and 0.80 kWh.0 -

Off the top of my head, the complete list of appliances on idle/standby would have been 2x UPS, 3x routers, 3x Sky digiboxes, 2x cordless phones, fridge/freezer, c/h boiler. Switched on was 1x PC and 1x CFL bulb.
It probably all adds up! I'll be moving to my own place in a week or two which will surely end up cutting the bills a bit. I haven't got around to looking into the problem in any more detail yet.0 -
I too called southern Electric, and moaned about it being such a high monthly bill, they said they could help by sending us a free energy monitor. This thing is excellent. Its pretty much the same as www. currentcost. com/product-cc128.html (without spaces) but branded southern electric, different colour etc.
If you're converned about your bill, (and who isn't?) and you're with southern electric give them a call as angelprincess says.
The real challenge is getting your useage as close to zero as possible!:j"So long and thanks for all the fish!"
