I have seen a thread for a British Gas Monitor but not Southern Electric, sorry if this is repeated.

This morning I received a free 'better plan monitor' which fits to the electric meter and tells you how much electric you are using and how much it costs.

I got it free by simply calling Southern Electric with my meter reading (I am already one of their customers)

If I save 10% of my energy over a year I get cash back on my bill too!

plus by phoning to get my unit tarrifs I was able to change to another plan and save over £20 a quarter!

Worth a phone call i'd say!

i got my free energy meter (electric) from british gas yesterday. set it all up and its now up and running.
    very informative.
im using 2p per hour with just the fridge and freezer operating.

putting the kettle on makes it nearly go off the scale!
    Get some gorm.
  • I got one from BG and can not get it to work. The standby plus thing is great but the energy monitor am on Prepaid meter and it has two wires coming from it so not sure what one am to put it onto and the screen thing is plugged in but still shows 0 on all settings

I cant get my British gas minim energy monitor to work, the receiver cant pick up the signal from transmitter, I thought at first it was sensor but I have an owl meter and used that one that clips on to cable and then on to minim transmitter. I even unplugged owl monitor to see if its caused interference but no luck I will have to send it back on freepost address

Also tried the internal sync button but it wont sync

Received mine from BG a month ago, unreliable!

A 20 watt low energy bulb, the Minim is telling me I am using 200watts!
A TV with a maximum 103 watt rating, (confirmed by the manual and a plug in monitor), tells me I am using 200 watts!

Over a certain number of days, the Minim informs of 226 kWh usage, however my digital electricity meter tells me that over the same days I have used 170 kWh!
33% difference? How accurate is the Minim?

If something is switched on then it`s using energy and if it`s switched off it`s not.
Things like freezers and fridges, you have no control over because they have to be on.
Common sense things like only putting enough water that you need in a kettle and switching off lights save energy.
So you don`t really need a gadget that`s using energy to tell you what energy you are using.
Switching off things will save you energy.

Hi Alared. I am pretty sure all of us do have common sense, it is the FREEBIE thingy that we are interested in whether or not we receive it is another matter. I guess. But the point I am trying to make is, its supposely FREE......:D

  • wE WANTED TO USE THE MONITER SO WE COULD CUT DOWN AND SET OURSELVES A TARGET EVERY WEEK. but as can not get it working no chance of that. We do save on things like sharing a bath with our son or eachother and cooking some meals in bigger lots so can freeze and just warm up later.

Good point and good luck to anyone who can get one.
As far as I know you have to be on some kind of benefit or actually be with southern.
I`m with ebico for gas and recently changed to B Gas for electricity.

BG have the gadget for people on benefits and southern appear to have it for their own customers.

We are exactly like you, not on benefits and received an invitation from BG to apply for this and the energy saving "plug", that turned out to be a 6 way extension lead, 4 for the standby shut down, and 2 for things needing to stay on, VCR, DVDR etc.
