Might be completely irrelevent to your situation, but I used to have a similar problem with an old pc. It turned out that a program I was running was effectively changing the sound settings and I always ended up with a tick in the 'mute' box in the audio properties which meant no sound, every time I ran this particular program.

No idea why or how it did this, but it did.

Have you checked your audio properties? Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices?

Try unplugging them and plugging them in again, blow away any dust...loose connection maybe?

Glad you got it sorted. :)

I'm surprised that the drivers were an issue though, especially since the speakers were working and it was only every now and then this was happening. Weird.

I had an issue with my sound a few months ago. I did the exact same thing and updated the drivers. They were perfect again.
