There's always a risk, but I've never lost data when I've done it http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Just double checking here, but I am not tapping R for the Recovery Console am I? I am taking the route of re-installing Windows in the original location, and this should have the effect of repairing it?

Not having much luck here. I have removed the hard disk and plugged it into another PC using a SATA to USB cable, and I am not able to read anything off the disk. I guess that would suggest that no data is easily recoverable, and probably not worth wasting time on?

The hard drive is fried. Can you do a chkdsk on it using the second computer, checking for bad sectors?

I followed the instructions and was not presented with an R option, so I skipped to Warning 2 as directed. Then I went to the Recovery Console and bootcfg /rebuild but it didn't work because it found a corrupt file system, and recommended chkdsk. I ran this (from my original PC) and it found one or more errors, so I am now running chkdsk /r.

    Will report back...

Fantastic news - chkdisk /r seems to have worked and now my PC appears to be in full working order again!

I am now taking a complete and up to the minute backup just in case. Thinking also about scapping the old hard disk in favour of the new one as it may we ll be unreliable now.

Thanks to all those who offered advice.

I'm glad you're sorted. Remember that chkdsk /r works by locating bad sectors on the disk, gathering whatever data it can from those areas and rewriting the same elsewhere. Finally it marks the bad sectors to prevent the PC from trying to access it.
It's a sure sign the drive is dying.
