Thank you for all the comments and advice, well LA sent an exterminator in yesterday and said they would leave me a copy of the safety report - went after work no report so have not gone back. I have contacted solicitor who am meeting on Monday, he is very positive that we can get our money back and find somewhere else to live.

So finally am having a happy day today.
  • Hi,
I have just found fleas in my flat and we've lived there about 6/7 weeks. We're pretty sure its the carpets and there was only a wardrobe and a cooker in the flat and nothing else when we moved in. We have no pets either.
It must be living in the carpets from the previous tenants. We think the flat could have been empty for about 8 months before we moved in, though we're not certain of this.
The landlord has been told and he came and put some flea powder down, but i'm not confident that it will work effieciently.
What are our rights here? Can we leave the flat as to be honest I really dont feel comfortable sleeping in the bedroom any more (thats where we've found them).
    Please help :-)

I like animals but, when you hear stories like this, is it any wonder that a lot of properties say "no pets". Yes, the majority are fine but try telling that to someone who ends up finding fleas in the house they've moved into.
  • Yeah, its even worse then they're not even caused by your own pets, but some %^&*$% else's!!

I don't even have any pets of my own.
I don't see why I should have to put up with s345 like this........

The reason the majority of pet properties are fine and not flea ridden is because the owners have a reasonable approach to hygiene.

If you don’t look after yourself and your house (à la How Clean Is Your House) you’re highly unlikely to look after your pets either.

Mistressweb you probably just need to read from post #1 here to get a few ideas. As a pet owner of many years I can vouch that the essence of solving the problem is in this thread. :)
  • I've had two properties returned with fleas.

The last one, all the carpets and underfelt were removed/binned, kitchen plinths, and bath panel were also removed to allow thorough treatment, a cellar located in the building was also sprayed, the property was re-let about a month later.

The new tenant had been in the property for two weeks when she called me " my baby's getting bitten":mad::mad: the property was treated again, the second go killed them off.

These dirty, thick! scratching F****** move with their fleas and infest other properties.

I've got two dogs, both wear a flea collar.

Do you take pets?.................................Yeah, only alligators.

You usually need at least two hits because of their life cycle.

We had to have ours done when we moved in - we had tried ourselves but failed, so the LL got the professional in. We were quite surprised as the property had been empty for 4 months when we moved in, but the exterminator said that they can live for at least 6 months with no contact from pets

My last rental place had a no reptiles clause! Luckily he was flexible, and I ended up with quite a few, but I don't think geckos can get fleas.

We bought a cottage that was infested and had the professionals in three times before it was clear. I watched the man spray and he was very thorough; we left it the requisite couple of weeks before vacuuming ... and we were bitten again. Later we got our own cats and they had the spot-on-the-neck stuff from day one. I can tell you for certain that fleas will live in the cracks on wooden floors as well as carpeted areas.
