We are doing this trip in December this year, stoping off along the way. Have any MSE members done this trip before? If so, could you tell me what the best routes are( best places to stop off) and also any tips about the trains that you have.
I am also finding it difficult to find cheap accommodation in New York for 28,29,30th Dec. We want to be as central as poss.
Any info would be great!

I haven't done that exact route before, but have travlled extensively courtesy of Amtrak
Try www.amtrak.com and look into buying a travelpass (only available outside of US for foreigners) You can hop on and hop off and travel wherever you like.
I was impressed with Amtrak, lots of legroom and overnight journeys the guard comes round with a blanket and a pillow for non-sleeper berth passengers.
I am 5' 10 and found it comfy enough to sleep over night on the train as there is a foot rest that comes up.
Food on board is good, they have observation carriages and you meet a lot of people along the way.
I agree the the man in seat 61 is a great site !****************************0 -
