Linux I need help

Please could anyone help. I have a EeePC with Linux and even though it is able to connect to the web via wi fi I just can not get it to work. Can anyone suggest the best way of getting connected, some one once said something about getting a 3 mobile stick would that work?

You probably need to explain that a bit better. How do you know that it can connect to the web? It may just be that your network settings are wrong. For example if you have an incorrectly configured DNS setting, it would be possible to connect to a website via its IP address but not via its domain name.

A 3 mobile dongle would probably work, as it comes bundled with Linux software, but that may depend on which version of Linux you have (Linpus, perhaps?). But if you are trying to connect to a home network via wifi, the 3 mobile dongle would mean paying more for bandwidth that you already have anyway.

When I try to connect to my home wi-fi, it says the connection is pending and never changes and at University, it sometimes connects but the home page does not load, saying 'Web Page not found'. i have no idea how to check the dns settings

If you've got Linpus, I'd strongly recommend changing to the free Ubuntu Netbook Remix. It's a specially adapted version of the very popular and capable Ubuntu. It has support for all the netbook things like mobile broadband built in, so np need for complicated installations.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

If you have the 4g Linux model then the original Atheros Wireless drivers will have difficulty in connecting to the newer WPA standards resulting in the annoying "Pending ..." message.

Try updating the drivers using a wired connection.

Attach a patch lead to your router and connect the EE to it using the network port (top left side).
Select "Network" icon and create a Wired LAN connection using the Auto/DHCP settings

Once the wired connection is OK -check by clicking on the "WEB" icon to see if you can connect to the Internet.

Select the "Settings" tab and Click on "add remove Software"

Wait until the list refreshes (takes time) and select the "Update Wireless" option – it’s someway down the "Settings" list if I remember correctly.

Accept prompts to install. Then remove the patch lead, reboot and configure your wireless connection.

Tip - Don't be tempted to download all of the updates - just the wireless one. The phrase "If it ain't broke.. " is particularly relevant with this little so and so.

Actually it's Xandros, but that doesn't make your advice any less valid provided one isn't averse to a little tinkering. The older Eee models in particular suffer from a rather peculiar bug which adversely affects performance. It's easily fixed, but until the patch makes it into the official repositories those who use it are saddled with an older version of the kernel.
