I don't think a care-ful breeder would have let a cat go so quickly after surgery. As I've posted the majority of good breeders are utterly paranoid about their reputation-stories like yours can cause a lot of damage. Good breeders usually have waiting lists for kittens. Also they'll rarely, if ever, sell on a cat with health problems a)because of the animal's welfare b) because of the reputation. Cat breeders reckon this is the big difference between them and dog breeders.

I do think it's worth contacting the breed club for advice-also try Googling the pedigree prefix and see what comes up

Think advice re male/female is really sound

I hope you have some luck with the breeder regarding this. Most reputable breeders would want to help you, as said above.

Just to update, I have received a very nice email from the breeder last night saying she is very saddened and shocked by the news and that she had been praying for the cat since she heard she was ill (I e-mailed her before I took the cat to the vet on tues morning), she says she can't help but believe that the spaying caused the infection. She has said she is struggling financially at the moment but has offered us a male kitten for free, she also says she would vacinate him for us.

I received another e-mail from her this morning saying she is upset and angry as she really thinks something to do with the spaying has brought this on, she asked if we could ask our vet to get to the bottom of this. She also said that if we did not want the male kitten and if we would prefer a share of the cost in money she would be able to give it to us a bit at a time or when she sold the kitten.

I have decided to accept her offer of the kitten and I am really grateful to her for offering. I have seen the vet again this morning as he was giving the kitten a check up and he says they did a non laboritary post mortem and he thinks our cat had feline corona virus and the stress of the spaying in top of that brought the virus on. It has given me some comfort to understand why she got ill and why it all happened so quickly, I am also glad that it wasn't a result if something going wrong with the spaying, just very unfortunate that the stress it caused brought on the illness.

Thank you to everyone for their advice, it has been very helpful.

The breeder is a really good one who does care about her cats. I am glad you have come to an agreement and getting a new kitten to keep the other company.

Good luck with the new members of your family.

Sorry to hear about your problems with your cat.

We have 2 Maine Coons - they are 6 years old now. Littermates - brother and sister. Both neutered. They get on great.

Like other people I think you should take the male kitten the breeder has offered you.

Good luck and I sincerely hope that you have better luck with the new kits and much happiness with them in the future.

So glad to hear you have had a positive outcome - whilst there are some bad eggs around, there are also some really good breeders who genuinely care about the animals.

I would accept the male kitten too - I currently have a moggie boy(we had his sister too, unfortunately she died from Gastric torsion at 4 years old) alongside my 2 coons, and I think the girls both get on better with him than they do with each other. Although be prepared - coons aren't small anyway, but some of the boys can be gentle giants lol!

That's good to hear, Feline Princess. The breeder does sound like a good, responsible one. I agree with the others, the little kitten and her brother seem destined to be together.

Thanks everyone! Will post some pics when we got the little boy home on sunday!

The little girl is called Chloe she is a silver tortie and the little boy is completley white and very sweet looking, we will probably name him after we get him home. I will be so glad when Chloe has someone else to play fight with as I am covered in bites and scratches!
