I can look at email through outlook express, but that means msges are then not shown on my main pc.

I would try using an alternative browser e.g. here this would prove if the problem is with IE.

You didnt state whether you are using the laptop wired to the ethernet or through a router, or whether the message only appears when you are trying to login to the homepage of virgin.
If its the later can you get any webpage up,
Also what firewall are you using windows built in or something else.

So you can access the internet and other webpages, so its just their homepage.
just googled the problem, and its common, all fixes says delete the cookies, or delete the cookie relating to virgin manually,
    found this

    Internet Explorer 6:
    → Tools → Internet Options
    → Delete Cookies → OK
    → Delete Files → OK
    → Clear History → Yes
    → OK

    Internet Explorer 7:
    → Tools → Internet Options → Delete...
    → Delete files → Yes
    → Delete cookies → OK
    → Delete history → OK
    → Close (browsing history window)
    → OK

    Mozilla Firefox
→ Tools → Clear Private Data
    [x] Browsing History
    [x] Download History
[x] Saved Form and Search History
    [x] Cache
    [x] Cookies
    → Clear Private Data Now

IE 8 would be the same as 7

I would run CCleaner, to clear out all the caches, then run malwarebytes antispy to make sure theres no spyware causing it, and also maybe hijackthis, then after all that a reboot,
    then try again.
if it fails yet again, by pass the router temporaily modem directly into the laptop, and try again,.
could be something between the wireless connection between laptop and router, if it works when its connected directly.
