Sordid reality behind Dubai's gilded facade

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article6716543.ece

Excellent article in the Times from Rod Liddle.

A real tale of massive over-development on a huge scale. An estimated £335 billion of projects have been halted or are on hold.

Really puts our problems into perspective.

An economic, social, political and environmental disaster zone.

And a hideous monument to the shallow, unsustaiable debt-fuelled consumerism of recent years.

May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the testicles of all its supporters.

What programs can they put on the Discovery Channel now that the Palm Island and other landmarks are a busted flush?

I just never understood the appeal of buying a holiday flat in Dubai. Built with slave labour, in a country where women cannot speak to men they are not related to, run by corrupt despots. It deserves to go down the pan.

Is it true that half of it is built with slave labour? I read an article quoting one architect laughing and joking about it and calling it 'inevitable' and 'necessary'.

I had a Muslim pal who used to educate me on the basic principles of Islam. Doesn't seem to square too well with them, but I suppose you can justify anything if you really want to.

Yes, and the slave labourers usually have their passports taken away from them by the gang-masters, and are forced to "live" in containers for the duration of the project. This is Capitalism at its very worst, and the fact that the UK/US have very good relations with Dubai (conveniently turning a blind eye to the treatment of women), merely highlights our double standards with regard to human rights abuses.
