What are Capital One up to?

Today I tried to use my Capital One Mastercard to buy some travel
insurance (only £20) and the insurance website reported "DO NOT HONOR".
I contacted Cap1 and although at first they said "No problem", when
pushed they agreed that they had refused the transaction and transfered
me to someone who queried the only three current transactions on my
card which were O2, Amazon and Wilkinsons. None of these could be
considered 'dodgy' and none were over £25.
They were unable to give any other reason but are going to cancel my
card and issue a new one, in "about a week".
A similar thing happened last month (without the card renewal bit) when
they stopped my card and I had to ring and verify various small puchases.
I understand that they could be being careful but it could work out very
inconvenient if I am shopping or away from home with only the one card
with me and it is declined.

Sounds like your card's been flagged by their fraud-prevention systems for special attention. Not because of anything you've done, but maybe because of the variety of online purchases?

Because these systems are automated, they don't always get it right. It's just one of the things we have to put up with .

  • They did the same with me a few months ago and when I queeried it I was told that a monthly statement had been returned as "No longer at this address" This was untrue as I had received all my statements and made all the necessary payments.

May be worth carrying an additional credit card to be on the safe side.

Everyone should have at least one back-up card, IMO, particularly if your work takes you away from home frequently.

No credit card is 100% reliable and sadly there's the ever-present possibility of fraud, which means your card could be blocked temporarily through no fault of your own or the provider.

What's more, if your lender varies your Ts & Cs or cuts your limit without warning, you have an alternative to hand. From a credit rating point of view, it makes sense too ;)
