On a different note, will my 'no claims' from driving this company car, be taken into account if I go for private insurance? I hope so, as I've no claims for over 4 years now!

    Thanks again,

    JtA
Possibly - but it might depend on the insurance company. A few years ago i hadn't had a car of my own for a few years but had been driving husbands company car (with agreement of husbands company). when i bnought my own car i was given some sort of no claims to start off with as i'd been driving hubbys car. This was in 2000.

Unfortuantely i can't remember any more details than that, not sure what insurance company it was or how much they let me start off with. Perhaps worth ringing round some insurance companies to check and see what sort of money you'd be looking at for insurance.

    Cheers for that Nearlyrich.

That's what I love about this site-somebody,somewhere has already 'been there, done that!'. Looks like he's gonna have to make a great offer to me to give up the Company car!

    Hi Jockthearab

if you go to www.confused.com and get an online quote there IS a facility for putting in you company car ncd to see what difference it will make. Please note that if the insurance company does offer you cover they will need to see proof on NCD from your employer.

    MTC

p.s. as a side issue. confused.com. really does go into some detail before giving you a quote and the form can take about 15 mins to fill out. I recently got a quote from them for my sisters car which was very, very keen indeed. I followed Martins advice and then went to the company direct and saved myself another 20%. Time spent very well indeed !!
  • You could try 'Elephant.co.uk'. A while ago I had insurance with them and it wasn't going to cost any extra to include business use - albeit with only about three months remaining.
I'm considering opting out of a company scheme at the moment, mainly due to having a minus tax allowance for the past three years which will be getting worse come April - does anybody know of any decent private lease options - preferably for nearly new cars?
  • My Boss has a company car which is supplied by the department. He also uses the company car to work for a second job for the afternoons and nights. Is this legal or should he be paying more car tax? Are there rules regarding usage of a company car for a second company when it is supplied by the first company?
  • I would like to keep my own car for personal mileage and I have to use a company car for business as I am a sales person. What's the best thing to do?

I am confused .... can you help ?, my husband is a car salesman, he is given a car to use every day to get home etc and can use it for personal use when he is off, but the car can change daily, ie what is not sold and what has been traded in, does this still constitute a company car for tax reasons ?, obviously we cant treat it as a normal car, it has to have no personal possesions in it, as soon as he gets to work the car gets put on the forecourt up for sale, if it sells then he brings a different one home. He has paid tax for 5 years on a company car.

Hello all very new to this board.

I have read through the company car tax thread hoping to find the answer but to no avail, so here goes

I have a company car that can only be used for business and commuting to the office, so I appreciate that I wil have to pay tax on the benefit in kind, but what I would like to do is pay for the private fuel for commuting myself.

If my millage log calculates that I am commuting 21 miles a day, using the HRMC figure of 13p/mile for diesel cars, can I just add the ammount of fuel I have used per month to the tank rather than paying my employer

    Hope that makes sense

No you must physically reimburse your employer for the private fuel.
