Car Ins - NCD after company car

I am in the position of buying a car after having previously had a company car for the last 10 years. My employer is prepared to write a letter confirming my no claims discount of 5 years with detauils of any previous claims. My problem comes when trying to get a quote online or from insurance companies who will accept this as evidence. It appears from my initial enquiries that policies are different from company to company.

Any ideas on best approach to getting a quote or which companies will fully honour the NCD I have effectively accrued.

Your help is very much needed. I fear that most companies will not honour any NCD but may give me an "enhanced introductory discount" at best and I will have to spend most of the day just phoning round.

Thanks

  • Yes this is a problem, and generally insurance companies will only give an enhanced introductory discount as you say.

May be worth contacting your employers vehicle insurers for a quote if they provide private motor cover. Otherwise I would suggest approaching a high street insurance broker or agent to see if they can get you a better deal through their contacts or you could try your employers broker.

Hi - you should be able to match NCD with number of claim free years in your company car although it's a couple of years since I had to look into it myself.Suggest you ring the following as this is not quoted online :

    Saga
    Tesco
    Aon Bonaport 0800 083 0952

If you still need more names I should be able to unearth a few more.Best of luck.

I had insurance with direct line before I got my company car. When I left them I asked how long my 7 years no claims was valid for and they said 2 years, but 3 if I went back to them. It's coming up for 3 years and I've still got a company car, but am looking to change jobs and get my own car again. Company cars are over-rated in my opinion! Hopefully I can time it so I get direct line to take me back or I'll be extremely annoyed

    Hi,

For something like this I would also consider a local broker or a specialist as you may get more joy out of someone that know the industry inside out.

I have found Lancaster to be very good, but thats for my classic car.

    Best regards

    Thanks for all your help.

Problem I have with my own company's insuraance is that they have changed insurance company each year. Did a google search and managed to identify sainsbury's and masterquote who will supposedly take on my NCD, just need to call them to confirm. Will try the others suggested by you guys. Thanks again for your help.

    Any others gratefully accepted.
  • Company Car Bonus will be accepted at http://www.endsleigh.co.uk. However with all insurance companies you normally need to get proof of the driving record from the fleet insurer not just your employer.

Company cars are over-rated in my opinion!

I'm not trying to be argumentative here  but I can't understand this kind of comment, in my experience of running my own car for business and running a company car with an 11p per business mile allowance for fuel, I know which I prefer. OK I pay tax on the value of the car but the tax I pay wouldn't cover a lease for the vehicle I drive let alone pay for insurance, tyres, service, breakdowns, windscreens etc.

I am about to change my car in July and I'm in the process of choosing the new one, from a list of over 2000 models on my list or I can take a cash payment instead which is if i remember correctly around £300 pre Tax & NI. I have looked at a personal leasing site and the car I think I will pick would cost me £600 per month plus insurance (Group 10) and they want 3 months up front with order, £1800, plus with the mileage I do (40K) there may be a surcharge for maintainance. With a company car there is a guy in the office who will arrange for the car of my choice to be delivered to my home on the changeover day and if anything needs sorting I just dial a number and pick the right extension and things are sorted whilst I get on with my job. My DH can drive it and anyone I name who is not a young or inexperienced driver.

I would genuinely love someone to explain why not having a company car is better because i just can't see it....

I agree entirely with having a company car. I just replaced the entire tyres on mine at a cost of £600! and it is only a Renault Laguna! That would have put a serious dent in my wallet if I privately owned the car.

Company cars do take the hassle out of being a car driver and in my mind that has a value.

I would genuinely be interested if people can explain how it is cheaper to come out of the scheme (I think I get £450 lease hire per month) buy an equivalent car and maintain and insure it?
