Got one of these, the online reviews say you should get about 160 shots from one charge, however i took mine on holiday, fully charged and using the max Mp, I only managed about 40 shots before the battery showed red, and a few shots later stopped altogether, i did of course use the zoom sometimes, but not that much, and about 10 sec of cine. I didnt always switch off between shots as this moves the lens back which must take a lot of battery. Just wondered how many anyone els has got?. Its the original Canon Battery 780ma.

I've got an older Ixus 50, and get between 200 and 400 shots, depending on whether the flash is used or not. However I often have the display off because I don't like framing shots with it, prefer to use a viewfinder (prob because I'm used to my DSLRs).

I keep it as a snap camera and probably only charge it every month or so.

I've found sometimes it reports the battery is low or running out, but 10 mins later it carries on fine.

I have an Ixus 60 and although I don't count the shots to requiring a recharge it does seem to go on forever before necessary. I would estimate more than 160 though.
I use the zoom quite a lot and the display to frame pics. However, most shots are daylight and the flash is more or less permanently switched off. I purposely disable the flash every time the camera is switched on but sometimes forget and only one pic with flash is then taken!
I use both the supplied Canon battery and a non Canon spare and they each seem to have a similar life span.

Just as i thought-this camera does not give enough pics per charge, im sure its not the battery as the spare (non canon) is just as bad. bought from the canon outlet E-bay(refurbished) Let that be a lesson!

Talk to their outlet shop and ask for a refund if it doesn't perform as it should.

As I said before I get at least 200 out of my Ixus but usually many more, and own a lot of Canon gear, my DSLRs get 400 to 500 out of a single charge, and I expect the Ixus probably manages a good 300, but I rarely take many with it.

Are both the batteries new, or reconditioned? Old batteries won't hold a full charge, LiIon batteries have a set life of charges and discharges, after which they'll perform very badly. Or it could be an electronic fault with the camera.

Do you have your brightness up high, I tend to push mine low on all my cameras, as I'm not that fussed about the screen, I compose using a viewfinder and find the low bright setting on the screens is fine to review pictures with.

Checked my background, its was at maximum, so i lowered that. TBH even at min it seems bright enough, i also switched off all the "Sounds"- shutter etc, and switched it to "Auto off" althoug this retracts the lens so it may be counter productive......a quick "test" shows better results, thanks
  • I'm amazed no-one mentioned you not switching it off between shots! How long between shots? Assuming you've got the display on, that would eat the battery!!

I have an ixus 80IS and the battery life is without question the best I've ever owned, at least 200 shots at full resolution, with & without flash, but always switching off after each shot. I would say many more. On a recent holiday to Vancouver I was in full tourist-snappy mode all day every day and was only recharging about once a week.

    Hope this helps
