Hi Guys,

I just checked to see when my car needs it MOT again and noticed i have been driving my car without MOT for a month, it expired 22nd June 09. What happens if i get caught by the police driving without MOT? Do i get points?

Going to book it in for an MOT first thing in the morning.

Thanks

No MOT is a non-endorseable offence (no points) but I think is a £60 fine.

To be honest, I don't know if you get points - someone is bound to come along shortly and tell you.

I do know it is illegal to drive without one and can invalidate your insurance. When you book the MOT, make sure you tell them that it has run out, and that they put all your details, car reg, your name and address etc in the book, so that if you do get pulled up en route to the MOT station, they can back you up. I should explain, it is legal to drive the car to the garage for an MOT. Hence giving the garage all the info - hope that makes sense. :D

Having no MOT is no reason for your insurance to be invalidated.

The main insurance related downside of having no MOT is when you are unfortunate enough to have a write off whilst not having one. This affects the value of your car, (a car with current MOT is generally worth more than one with no MOT), and thus the amount of the settlement paid out.

The number of Insurers who specifically state in their Policy that a MOT is required as part of cover is very low - probably a handful at most. Even if you had no MOT and the vehicle was in excellent condition and roadworthy then this should be enough to satisfy that condition or in any complaint the the Financial Ombudsman.
