Virgin Credit Card late payments

  • the purpose of transferring the balance was to squash this credit card debt...

...3 months into owning a Virgin credit card I went away on holiday

I'm just amazed nobody has piled onto this yet

I would phone them up and beg and if that fails say you are outraged because the only reason you tried out MBNA was for this offer. It worked for me ... and needless to say I always used direct debit afterwards. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way.
Proud to be dealing with my debts!
    egg loan [strike]£10300[/strike] £2400
    student loan [strike]£4500[/strike] ZERO!!!
    MBNA CC £4500

I too set up a direct debit straight away for my virgin card, but did make a payment just incase it didn't go through.

I think it is plain obvious to anyone who gets a credit card, that you will be charged for missing a payment, but the bit about losing your 0% rate isn't always clear, although I must admit I did know about it.

I think it would be fairer of Virgin to say that in the case of a missed or late payment you will be charged and if you miss or make a further late payment, however long after, you will lose your 0% offer.

Of course everything is in the terms and conditions, but just how many people read all the terms and conditions, just like how many of us actually throughly read product instructions.

You are of course correct... very few people read the T&Cs.. however that's not MBNA's fault is it.. it's your fault!

That's because your statement was produced only a week after your call to them.

Under the terms of the DD guarantee they have to give you at least 10 days notice of both the date and amount to be collected. The ONLY mechanism they have for doing this is the statement.

To put yourself in with the best possible chance of the DD taking on the first statement you need to request a statement date which is nearly a month after you call to activate your card, ie if calling today (23rd) then ask for a 22nd of the month statement date. The benefits of this are two-fold...

    1. You give them (and your bank) 4 weeks to complete the DD formalities, and

    2. You can maximise the 0% period on MBNA cards such as the OP's, because all MBNA 0% deals end on a statement date...the current Virgin offer runs to the date the 16th statement is produced.
  • Thanks to everyone for their advice and comments. Hard leasson learnt! I have written to customer service pleading my case and have now set up a Direct Debit
