Samsung laptop 'dead' only 18 months old

Options
I was using my laptop last night and it suddenly died without warning.
Nothing happens when I press the 'on' button.
The battery is fully charged.
Any ideas anyone?

The warranty was up 6 months ago - do I have any post-warranty claim against Samsung under 'fit for purpose' legislation?

  • Have you given it time to cool down - it may have overheated? Just a thought

That was my hope as I went to bed - but this morning it's still ignoring me.

Try taking the battery out and putting it back in. This can be a symptom of a slightly unseated battery.

are any lights on it at all, when plugged into the mains? take everything you can out, cards, battery, mains lead, then just plug the mains lead in (without battery), and see if any lights come on, or if it powers up.

are there any lights on the power supply, have you checked the plug fuse?

I took the battery out and put it back in - still not working

Then, I removed: Battery, CD, HD
connected mains power, turned on - and the lights came on :T
    switched off
Replaced the CD & HD - it booted up :j
    Shut down, replaced battery
    turned on - nothing

So, thank you all - it appears to be the battery
It shouldn't have failed - I'm sure I've been kind to it
    - not left it on charge for weeks
    - not left it flat
    - half run it down every few weeks and re-charged

I wonder if Samsung will provide a free replacement?

    Glad it's working..

Batteries are the one thing that aren't covered (esp. out of warranty period), as they deteriorate with use, but it's worth giving Samsung a call, they might send you one .. if you sweet talk them.. ( I wouldn't mention the "fit for purpose" line as an opening gambit)

Just in case it dies again, maybe it's time to do a backup..

    hi,
i notice you gave Garatha some good advice a while back re a dead Samsung laptop, i have a similar problem with a somewhat older Samsung and have tried everything suggested as well as trying to boot from disk and swopping out the ram, still no good. the power light comes on, you can hear the disk drive start but the screen remains black, ive connected a seperate screen and nothing, try'd with and without battery, same thing. it froze during use for no apparent reason and now won't boot at all. any thoughts would be welcome, or do i demote it to a door stop?

You will need to direct the output to the monitor. Use the F keys with function key (blue, FN 1st key bottom row?) The F key will have a square on it, F2 or F8?? ie fn+F8
