£20 pounds to last for food till pay day! Help

Hi,

I only have £20 pounds to last for food till pay day. Currently my OH is away for the rest of the month so I just need to think about myself and our two dogs. I have a few things in the freezer but not enough to last for work lunches and tea. Please help with any ideas. I do not eat beef or lamb. Thanks in advance.

Loads of money .... I bet you end up spending £15 and have enough food left over for the following week once this thread's finished!
  • it would probably help the more experienced posters if you did a list of what you already have so they can help you?
Ive seen a few threads similar to this and am always amazed at how far the guys on here can stretch food and money so will be keeping an eye on this thread
I really really hope you can get some god advice, im not much help as been doing the OS shopping budgeting etc just a couple of months and am still learning!

    Cupboards
3 x Tins of Tuna Tuna pasta using some macaroni, a tin of sweetcorn, an onion & maybe a few frozen peppers? Make a cheese sauce or use a tin of tomatoes top with cheese.
    1 x Tin of Sweetcorn
3 x Tin of Chopped Tomatoes
    Pasta
    Spaghetti
    Macaroni
Rice Make up a rice salad to take to work for lunch.
Bag of Potatoes Baked potatoes with cheese or tuna.
    1 x Garlic
    2 x Onions
    Flour
    Sugar
    Tea
    Coffee
    Baking Powder
    Bicarb of Soda
Sundried Tomatoes Make some hummus and add a couple of these its very tasty!
    Dried Butter Beans
    Dried Chick Peas
    Cous Cous
    Rice Pudding
    Raisins
    Currants
    Loaf of Bread

    Fridge
    3 x Courgettes
    4 x Tomatoes
    Half a tub of Strawberries
    Milk
    Margarine
    Spread
    5 x Eggs
    Cheese
8 x Pork Sausages 2 for a sausage casserole with veggies & potatoes, 2 for a sausage sandwich or similar, 2 for a sausage pasta bake.

    Freezer
    1 x Spicy Pasty
1 x Cheese and Onion Pasty
1 Packet of Chicken Goujons Serve with cous cous & veggies
2 x Chicken Escalopes With potatoes and veg or cut into small pieces and stir fry with some courgettes, spinach & peppers.
1 x Packet of Vegemince make into a spag bol using a tin of tomatoes - you should get 3 or 4 servings out of it hopefully.
    Half bag of frozen Spinach
    Frozen Peppers
    Half bag of Brussel Sprouts
4 x HM Mushroom Burgers I'd eat with rice and spinach/sprouts.
    Chips
I've put some immediate things that sprung to mind in pink above. I'd also make an omlette with 2 of the eggs. You also have the basics to do some baking. Make some hummus with the chick peas, garlic, black pepper & olive oil to have with melba toast, crackers or as a dip.

I'd use the £20 you have (or some of it) to buy fruit, some fresh or frozen veggies for soup for lunch at work and milk & bread. Do you have an Aldi near you? They currently have nectarines, peppers, bananas, vine tomatoes, new potatoes and grapes on their Super Six offer at 49p each. The quality is superb too. I particularly like the nectarines and new pots myself ;)

If I think of anything else I'll come back on :D HTH

Just a quick scan., tuna sweetcorn and tomato pasta bake. A tin of tuna, the tin of sweetcorn and one of tomato, some pasta and bake. Grate some cheese on top if that's your thing. That should do 2 meals.

Couscous, courgette and chicken salad, can be eaten hot or cold, that's another thing.

Sausage, egg and chips for another
Toad in the hole with some sausage and make batter with egg, flour and milk.

Chickpea and spinach curry, chop one onion and garlic, fry off, some chickpeas, some spinach, add some curry powder and then a tin of tomatoes. Simmer till unctous.
    Mushroom burger and chips

    Courgette and sausage pasta

You've got plenty of meals without going to the supermarket :)

Ok, here goes, I'm assuming you've got some herbs/spices/stock cubes in your storecuboard to throw in:

Thursday Cheese and courgette frittata with sweetcorn
    Friday Sausage and mash
    Friday Ratatoillie (sp) with pasta
Saturday Jacket potatoes with tuna and sweetcorn
Sunday Vegemince shephards pie with sproats
Monday Mushroom burgers with sag aloo and bombay potatoes
Tuesday Butter bean and chickpea curry
Wednesday Chicken escalope with macoroni cheese and spinach
Thursday Cheese and onion pasty and chips

Lunches could be: cheese/tuna/sausage sandwiches, sweet/savoury pancakes, cheese on toast, eggs on toast, tomatos on toast etc.

Should only have to buy milk- bread should last all week if you pop it in the freezer and only take out 2-3 slices a day.

I'd spend a couple of quid on some fresh fruit and cheap yoghurts/chocolate mouse for puds.

    Hope this helps.
  • I'd go with eselt - Pretty much covered with those suggestions, I usually stock up on bread and things to go with it.

However no one seems to have mentioned anything for the dogs so I guess if you followed eselt's suggestions you should have enough left over for the dogs.

Worst case scenario: Eat the dogs. :p

    Best of luck!
