Unable to cancel card because of a 40p credit balance

Over the years I have taken advantage of the various balance transfer deals then cut up the card never to be used for anything else. After reading Martin's information on cancelling all credit cards if you have zero balance because even if you don't use the card it still looks like you have £xxxxs available to use on that card I decided to take his advice.

I have cancelled all my cards except the Abbey, as it is proving an absolute nightmare! I have not used the card for over 12 months, I have 40p credit on the card and because I won't give them my bank details or another credit card to transfer the 40p they won't close the account. I was told to purchase an item then I would be able to deduct the 40p credit from the balance. I have told them to give it to charity but they can't do this. I was even told to go to a local branch (by the way it wasn't local to me, I've never been in an Abbey branch before!) and it could be closed through them. I did this, and even the bank were surprised by the tactics being used in order for the card to stay active.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Thank u

Why don't you want to give them account number so that they can transfer the 40p...that would be the end of it.
Otherwise have you ask them if they are able to send you a cheque to the value of 40p

Give them your bank details - no reason for you not to.

Thanks for replies. I did suggest a cheque to make it easier for them but they can't do that - probably costs more in admin. Should I have to give my bank details for 40p? I understand what you're saying re the hassle but I suppose it was just the principle of the situation.

The principle is to close the card with minimum inconvenience to yourself :) Can be done with one more phonecall :)

You don't owe them any money so there should be no problem for you giving them an account number or a CC number, from that moment on you'll be able to close that account

Principles often cost time and money. How much have you spent so far?

Another option...do your supermarket shopping, pay 40p on your Abbey card (yes they will take it...I've done it myself) and the rest on another card, get a zero balance statement, ring and close account. Problem solved!...is it not?

At the tesco self self I often use my cc for the tiny amounts to just cover if not enough cash.
    Nice to save.
