Wifi and Wired networks - thoroughly confused

Options
:confused: I happily had a home network set up as follows;

1 Main PC hardwired to Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router
2 Second PC also hardwired to Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router
3 Third PC connected wirelessly to Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router
4 Laptop connecting wirelessly to Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router

Each machine could access the Internet through the Router and my ISP was a satellite provider

Unfortunately the Satellite system deteriorated over time and then failed several times before ending completely (I understand the owners went bankrupt)

I then arranged to get a BT Broadband connection, but to still be able to use no.s 3 and 4 opted for a wireless modem (BT Voyager 2091) thinking that it would have similar connections to the Linksys Router ie 4 ethernet ports as well as wi-fi connectivity.

Once the BT kit arrived and it only had wireless connections and one ethernet port, undaunted I just plugged the Voyager into the Linksys and was delighted to find PC's 1,2 and 3 could see each other and have access to the Internet, but the laptop steadfastly refused to connect wirelessly.

In my attempts to correct this, I have completely confused myself by re-setting router TCP/IP values and various PC and Laptop IP settings!!!

I really need someone who wouldn't mind taking the time to tell me,

''this modem should have this IP address and that one should be a Gateway? and have this IP, set these PC's/Laptop to this and that'' etc.

Would anyone be able and prepared to help?

TIA

A

I seems to me that you have replaced a good wireless router with an inferior one! Does the Linksys wireless G broadband router not have a modem built in? Surely the simplest option would have been to replace the satellite kit with an ADSL modem connected to your existing Linksys wireless network which was working fine.

I took the advice of the BT people that the Voyager was the one to have.

Although, you may well be right - that the Linksys router is superior and has a modem built-in (anyone know if it does?), however the there is no telephone connection on the back of the Linksys whilst there is one on the Voyager gadget. So it would seem that I am stuck with the BT one.

If the linksys doesn't have a phone connection, it won't be an adsl router (for BT lines), just a cable/dsl model.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Lee,
    The Linksys is a WRT54G.

    Thanks for the quick response, so then the Linksys cannot be used and I am back with my original plan which is;

    Voyager 2091
    > Linksys WRT54G
    > PCs and laptop

Problem is which settings should I have, to make them all work happily
can any TCP/IP gurus out there let me know?

What IP does the router have? If its 192.168.0.1 :-

Make sure all the p.c's have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

    Router 192.168.0.1
    PC1 192.168.0.2
    PC2 192.168.0.3
    Laptop 182.168.0.4

Default gateway on each machine is 192.168.0.1 (or router IP if different)

    T4i,

    Thanks for the info,

But don't forget I have an extra bit of kit in there.

Presumably by Router you mean the Voyager
if so what address do i give the Linksys Router?
before giving incremental no.s to the PC's and laptop

and what DNS no.s should each one have please.

Can't you ditch the linksys, and use 3 wirelessly, and one wired.

Difficult to know where to start, as we don't know what you have changed. Currently are you working with 1 wired, 2 wireless, and one laptop that can't connect wirelessly. Posting a ipconfig /all output from the laptop might help. are you using encryption, does the ssid match?

Yes, that will work. See this thread for 3 suggestions on how to connect/configure the modem (Voyager in your case) and the Linksys router.

<<Can't you ditch the linksys, and use 3 wirelessly, and one wired>>

No, as I would have to buy wireless kit for 2 PC's and funds just are not available!

What I want to do is start from scratch making sure I get the right addresses.

    Kit_______________Voyager 2091__Linksys WRT54G_______PC1____________PC2___________PC3__________Laptop
    IP Address_________192.168.0.1__________?___________192.168 .0.2______192.168.0.3____192.168.0.4____192.168.0.5
    Subnet ___________255.255.255.0___255.255.255.0______255.255.255.0_____255.255.255.0__255.255.255.0__255.255.255.0
    DNS 1_________________?______________ ?_______ _______?______________ ?_______ ______?___________ ?
    Gateway all = 192.168.0.1

Am I on the right lines here, and what should be the addresses where I have __?__

Also should the Linksys stay as a Router or should I switch it to become a Gateway?

I am OK with changing WEP keys etc, I just am not familiar with DNS, Gateways, Routers etc
