Passport renewal

Passport charges are going up again this year to £77.50. According to the Home Office Identity and Passport Service website: “The decision to increase passport fees follows a decline in passport applications experienced during these difficult economic times.”

Which planet is the Home office living on? This is economic nonsense and it is akin to a car manufacturer saying that the prices of cars will be increased because demand has dropped. Everyone has to cut back in difficult financial times, why does the Home Office not do the same? Perhaps someone should challenge the minister Mr P Woolas on the above statement. I wonder if Martin Lewis will take on the various government fee charging services like he did the banks.

I know someone who was born in the US but has lived in the UK since she was a baby. When she was born in 1969 in the US she could not get British citizenship through her British mother. She had to get a US passport. She has had a US passport ever since she was born an it has a stamp "indefinite leave to remain". She can no longer have the stamp in her new US passport. The Home Office will charge £820 to have the stamp "transferred" to the new US passport. The alternative is to travel with her old and new passports. How does the Home Office justify such a huge sum for a rubber stamp on a passport, and yet she the stamp in her old passport is acceptable. There must be many rip offs when it comes to services for which the government chages fees. The Telegraph dumped on the MPs for their expenses, perhaps they should look into fees charged by government departments.
