can I transfer a balance from my MBNA card to my partners new Santander Zero card

In the last few months I transferred a balance from my partners Capital One card (they put the interest rate up ) onto one of my MBNA cards which had a lower interest rate. This transfer was allowed by MBNA.
My partner has now got the new Santander Zero card which has a zero % interest rate for 12 months. We tried to transfer the balance from my MBNA card to his Santander Zero but were refused as they said they can only transfer a balance held by the principle card holder.
I have considered applying for my own Santander Zero card but do not have a brilliant credit rating (by the way does it make a difference if you apply online or in branch).
Seems like such a waste to have the facility to transfer a balance to 0% but have been refused tho another credit card company allowed a balance transfer from his card to mine...!!!
Any suggestions or ways round this...??
Thanks

This should not be the case and you should be able to transfer from any card (as long as it is not from the Santander group & Cahoot) irrespective of who is the principle card holder. Give them another call.

I'm not sure what you are saying really. Any balance always belongs to the principcal cardholder. A secondary cardholder has a card in their name and permission from the principal c/h to spend on the account, but the debt is legally the principal c/h's, and it is their responsibility to pay it.

Are you saying that you are a secondary cardholder on the Santander card, and that you tried to transfer a balance to it? If so, then you can't do this, only the principal cardholder can arrange a balance transfer. Get your husband (if he is the principal c/h) to ring Santander and arrange the transfer. He only has to give them the card number that he wants to transfer the balance from; he doesn't have to tell them that the card is in your name.

My understanding from the post is that the OP wants to transfer the balance from MBNA card (she is the principal card holder) to her partner's Zero card (partner is the principal card holder). This has been refused as her partner is not the principal MBNA card holder. Maybe the OP can clarify who made the request.
  • Thanks for responses...... to clarify.... I do not hold a secondary card on my partners Santander Zero card. He made the call to request the balance transfer and the operative at Santander went away and checked after my husband had given them my MBNA card number and came back and told us that a balance transfer can only be made from a card held by the principal card holder. As I mentioned previously I had done this exact thing a while back when I transferred his debt to Capital One onto my MBNA card at a lower rate. So my question really is :- Is there a clause in the terms and conditions of the Santander Zero Card that says balance transfers can only be done from accounts held by the principal card holder.... Is this peculiar to Santander Zero ?
When I transferred the original balance onto the MBNA card from his Capital One card I gave the card number and mentioned that it was my husbands card and they had no problem with that.......
I will get him to call again and give it another try - thanks for the advice everyone and I'd appreciate any further suggestions.

Have not seen anything in t&cs that support the line given to your partner. Definitely try again. If your partner has online access to manage the card, there could be the possibility to make BT online without going through the reps who are best avoided!

I've just has the same response, although I said that the card WAS in my name despite it not being, hoping it just goes through. I couldn't find anything that said this was the case so finger crossed. The rep said "thats all gone through" so I can't see there being any problems....

I transferred a balance from OH's Capital One card to my Santander/Abbey account only last month, so he may have been given duff information. This happens to us all from time to time. If possible, I would phone back during normal business hours, when he's more likely to be put through to someone who knows what they're up to.

We've repeatedly warned of Santander's dire customer service, but it can't be stressed too often.

If you decide to chance your arm, it's best to apply in branch. Online applications are still subject to long delays, apparently

  • I'm interested in what's being said here. I really want to do a shuffle and am nervous about it. I know you can't shuffle between banks which are under the same umbrella bank - but how can I find out who owns who? I am with Alliance and Leicester at present who are MBNA/ Santander. Is there a list of which other banks are under Santander?

  • Thanks to all who made suggestions/comments. I have just transferred the balance from my MBNA card to partners new Santander card online....... had to wait a while to get all the relevant passwords etc but it worked. So big thanks to td_007 who made this suggestion. At least we've now got this balance on a 0% for 12 months.......
