Hi folks
First time posting in this thread after an awful phone call with my mum who drinks too much.
Basically, my brothers and I asked her to give up work because her health has been getting worse over the past few months, we decided to club together and give her what she would have been earning doing her cleaning job so she wouldn't be concerned about where the money was coming from for her next bill. She gave it up last week and now she's started drinking again, it's been three full days. I just screamed at her over the phone and told her if she was going to sit in the house drinking then she'd be better getting her bl**dy job back again
I don't know what to do nowShe's been a very heavy drinker on and off for many many years. I've had all the phone calls, the ones where she's full of self-pity, ones where one brother or the other is the worst in the world, the one where she's going to take an overdose - you name it I've had them all.
When she drinks she's so full of self pity, she doesn't realise that we're suffering to, or maybe she does. I can't empathise with her because I don't drink at all but do realise it's an addiction. I can never humour people when they're drunk.
Now I'm feeling so awful having shouted at her and hanging up the phone. I just don't know what to doDFW Nerd no: 1490 -
Hi
Have you tried sitting down with her and talking about her drinking being a big problem?
You will have to wait until she's completely sober though, I know its difficult but shouting at her when she's drunk may well make it worse, she will drink more, because she will be more depressed.“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -
We've all talked to her about it when she's sober. She had been doing so well recently. There is me and my five brothers and we're always trying to keep her busy, having her look after the grand children, taking her out etc.
Update: she's just off the phone this minute giving it 'all that'. I've just slammed the phone down, I just can't cope with this cr*p anymore :-(DFW Nerd no: 1490 -
When you drink, you are mostly so full of self pity, you can't think of anyone else, or if you do, you just think that you are such a bad person for having done something to that person, it comes back to self pity again, or self harm in some cases.
It sounds like you have tried to do the right thing.
There is an organisation that you can ring, which helps families of alcoholics, it might be a good one to ring, I'll try and find the details for you.
I can't find it, Mich knows it so does trafalger, someone will be along with it in a while, keep checking back. Shirl do you know it?
There has been some similar cases brought up before on both threads, you could try searching through them for ideas.
Sorry I can't help any more.
All the best to you and your family.“Pleasure of love lasts but a moment, pain of love lasts a lifetime.”0 -
Thank you that would be very helpful.DFW Nerd no: 1490
