how can DH get another cc?

my husband is trying to get a credit card.

he currently has an airmiles duo card, which he has never missed a payment on, a loan which he has had one or two late payments in a year , a phone contract-always paid on time and.....hes got a joint bank account with me that has had a lot of unauthorised overdrafts etc etc and not been paid......

im going to the banktomorrow to take him off this bank account, because i dont want my mistakes screwing his credit history up!!

anyway, he has applied for baclaycard initial, vanquis and cap1 and they have all declined him>??? do you think this is because of the bad history of overdraft and bank or is it because i live at same address and ive got terrible credit history?? how can he get another credit card?

As you already have a joint account your credit file is linked with his

Taking him off won't remove the link I'm afraid.

Your late/missed payments on loan, overdraft etc....will have an impact on both credit file. Any more CC application will severely damage your file even further. If you have been declined with the 3 cards mentioned, it is very unlikely anyone else will.

Address is (should be) irrelevant. It's because you're financially linked with joint accounts and/or mortgage.

If you look at each of your credit reports you'll see the financial association on each of your individual reports.

Basically by improving the picture that's the credit card companies are seeing. Clearing the overdrafts and not missing any payments for at least a year should do it. No immediate solution for you other than that.

If you've been rejected by the sub-prime card providers then I wouldn't waste time and add more searches to your credit report by applying for any others (or you could take the view your report is trashed for a year and apply for them anyway - your call). Credit searches drop off your credit report after 12 months.

If you have taken him off your account so no longer have any shared financial liabilities, you can ask the Credit Reference Agencies to disassociate you.

according to our credit files we are not linked. we just both have an overdraft with arrears etc etc.....but it doesnt say its joint.

i specifically wrote a few months a go 2 experian to clarify we are not financially connected.

the thing is....these credit cards i.e cap1, bcard initial are specifically for people with bad credit. the only bad credit for him is an unauthorised overdraft thats why it doesnt make sense for him to be rejected,if peoplewith ccj's, defaults etc are being accepted.

Just a thought, maybe he's not attractive enough to these companies. If they take it on his account - he's got a good credit track record, they usually give tho those who aren't great with money/cards, hike up a lot of debt, receive charges etc..

perhaps not but just a thought... he will have a few searches on his report now, hoever, perhaps try a high street bank card

If you share a financial product with someone else (eg. joint bank account), then you are financially linked and the poor management of their affairs could certainly have a knock-on effect on his credit rating, but simply living at the same address has no effect whatever.

If he has an otherwise unblemished credit report, it would be worth separating your financial affairs. Whilst you remain linked, lenders are likely to view him as too great a risk. Once your a/cs were separated though, you could write to the credit reference agencies and ask for a notice of disassociation, to stop your credit history affecting his in future and vice versa.

For more tips to improve his chances of credit card acceptance, have a look at the *Credit Rating: how it works and how to improve it guide* especially Martin's *Manage and Improve your credit score* article ;)
