Confused about Temporary cover

Hello,

Excuse me if I come across slightly dim but I have very little dealing with insurance things the wife usually takes care of all that for me.

My problem is this, my brother in law owns a car with his own insurance policy, he wants to lend me his car so we can take it on hols with me driving. After contacting his insurance company(Aviva) to add me as a temporary driver he was told the only way to get me added is to take out a new 1 year policy with me down as a additional driver. I honestly thought they could add me onto his policy for a typical admin fee for this kind of service.

I also looked at dayinsure(dot)com but have since found out that since my brother in law has a policy on the vehicle I can't have my own policy also on the car as this is against the law....is this correct?

Can anyone suggest the best course of action for me to get covered for only a week?

Try aviva again. Maybe the agent you spoke to wasn't up to scratch! They have a specific policy for adding temporary drivers. Get B-i-L to ask them about it.

I would call them again (or get him to call them again) just to check the operator hasn't made a mistake.
In the past when I have wanted to add someone to my policy (for example for a lift to the airport) then I've just added them to the policy.
The insurers that I deal with charge a small premium for the cover plus about £15 for a admin fee.
It's seems very restrictive, so I woudl check again.

Ok all sorted now, seems the first person he spoke to didn't have a clue or was on some sort of commission for getting new policies.
