Internet Help (before I cry)

I'm sorry if this isn't at all appropriate; I'll delete it, just say the word!

This has been driving me INSANE since nine this morning. I have a new computer (wehey) & I'm trying to get it connected to the Internet. Until I can get around to having Broadband installed, I'm connecting it via good old dial-up, for a week or two. I've been trying to connect to Blueyonder's Surf Unlimited but here's the thing. Whilst it SAYS it has connected it will not load any web pages whatsoever; it just times out.

I've followed the XP troubleshooter right through & the Blueyonder one. This is what is bugging me; it says it is connected but when I ping the DNS server it fails on all four packets, saying that the host is unreachable. I've checked all of the modem settings, number dialled, even changed the port speed. Why is it being the devil to me? I think this day is just out to test me so any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. If it makes any difference, I'm using the following modem: Aztech CNR2900 V.90 modem in COM3.

I'm off to cry.

Try a pay as you go service for now, just to prove that the hardware and software works. The chances are your new PC is not recognised by your ISP. I was 'black balled' for trying a few email clients and messing with their settings without much joy. Phone your ISP when they are there to answer the phone and do something about the problem, if the fault can be attributed to them.

  • Is your firewall blocking access?

With dial up blueyonder don't need to recognise the PC if it is plugged into a dial up modem of the PC they just recognise the phone number

Yes ,check that XP's firewall isn't blocking it and if it is an old modem check youve got the latest drivers.
