online degree funding

Options
Hi, im not sure if im posting in the right area but ive found an online degrees course that cost £4,000 a year. I was just wondeing if there was any funding available to help cover part if not all of the fees. The institute that runs the degree says that i wouldnt be able to claim goverment funding because its an independant institute. They alo dont offer bursary's or scholarships.

I would really like to do it online because i have 3 kids. The only other option is to put unviersity off untill all of my kids are at school or win the lottery.

Can you do the course you want to do with the OU? If so, they do have means tested bursaries available which can mean that you pay no fees at all, and get a small study grant as well.

if it's an institute that isn't recognised it's worth considering whether or not the qualification will be viewed well at the end of it (see Gillian McKeith's PhD!)
the OU may be a better option

That's very expensive for a University course. Have you tried looking into the Open University.

  • thanks everyone. Its a BA (hons) in graphic design and illustration. Its through the interactive design institute. Unfortunitly the OU dont do art courses. They offer a payment plan but even going part time money will be really tight especially with christmas around the corner.

Theres only 1 university offering illustration thats about an hour away from me but unfortunitly only offer the MA as a part time option.

Have you looked into student finance for a degree at a 'normal' university? Grants and loans are pretty generous and of course there is extra funding for parents. You won't have to pay any council tax and you will get heavily discounted public transport. If you can take in a lodger that is tax-free income that doesn't have to be declared for student finance. You may also be entitled to use the creche facilities and possibly not expeced to attend college much for an art/ design type course.

BA (Hons) Graphic Design &IllustrationThis is a Degree programme from the University of Hertfordshire which is designed to prepare students for a range of careers in the fields of graphic design and illustration. Over the course of the programme, students increasingly specialise in one of these two disciplines. Students also have the opportunity to include specialist study in Marketing within their core studies.

Seems odd that the online degree costs £1k more than Hertfordshire's in uni courses, yet don't attract grants etc. Doesn't seem to be a very cost effective degree but good luck anyway.
