Gas bill problems

First of all I'm new to this forum lark and apologise if I'm doing anything wrong. I know there's often strict protocols

Right, in my old house, the gas meter was broken and didn't tick over. When we noticed after a few months, the supplier was informed, but nothing was done. We were paying £79/month direct debit for both electric and gas, based on their recommendation, and as we weren't paying for gas the credit mounted up. When we told the company we were leaving at the beginning of June, they said the meter must be fixed before we could claim the credit back. The work was carried out end of June and I took all readings before i left.

Now, I called to close the account today, gave them the readings and now I owe £42.32, based upon an estimated reading for the gas. I tried to argue but nothing could be done, with no real explination for how the bill was estimated. Apparently, the gas for the year was £402.97, minus the credit left the £42 due in arrears. I paid the account off so I could close it, and feel I may have ruined my chances of getting any money I'm owed back by settling up.

Also, I have the bill from my land lord which was sent after I left, and nothing seems to tally with what I was told on the phone. It states the gas plus other charges are £705, minus the credit,, leaves £433 payable, yet I was told to pay £42 today to be even. The only thing that does correlate is the amount I paid today is the same as the VAT in the bill???

My questions are:
  • Can anyone shed some light on what's going off?
  • If they're taking too much from me, how can I get it back?
  • Any clues how they estimate the bill?
Sorry for the essay

You dont say when you advised your supplier the meter was broken, was it last week, month, year?

I suspect you will have been paying for gas but it was estimated.

You supplier should have sent the final bill to your forwarding address. Was the bill you landlord got your final bill just sent to the wrong address.

If it is your final bill it sound like what you were told on the phone was wrong and it looks like you may owe £433 or £391.
