Shared ownership-can I rent out spare room?

I am mainly looking at 1 bed rooms, but am viewing some 2 beds next week, a relative has suggested that I rent out the 2nd room to help me with the mortgage and rent, but I thought I read somewhere that this isn't allowed?
Thanks for any help

Yes you can :) Just dont tell them.

One of my friends is doing this and was telling me the rent pays for the shared ownership rent and some of the mortgage payment too. He is doing very well out of the arrangment financially.

I work for a HA selling shared ownership. THe official line is that you cant. However it is not policed as we are all overworked and so long as the rent is paid on time and there is no anti social behaviour involved, I see no reason why you shouldn't get away with it. The only thing is that you would be able to draw up a tenancy agreement, regular cash towards "shopping" for example would be fine. Sorry about the essay.
