Problems getting our deposit back

Hi, my boyfriend and I recently moved out of the room that we were renting in a house full of other people renting. The landlady decided she wanted to move back into the house and gave us all a few months to get out.

After I had left the house, but my bf was still there, one of the other people living there broke the washing machine. Their clothes were quite clearly in the machine so we're guessing it was probably them but obviously don't know for sure. Either way, it wasn't us and no one is owning up to it so apparently we all have to pay for it.

She also said that she was getting the house professionally cleaned.. So we have to pay for that too. I don't really see how that's fair- the house wasn't immaculate as 6-7 of us lived there, but we had a cleaning rota and it was never a complete tip.

I have no clue what our rights are, if we even have any... Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance guys :)

Yep we signed something about what was in the house, like sofas, chairs, tables, etc, and their condition.

Can anyone else help? She's charging us £85 for a broken stool which I'm sure didnt' cost that much because we didn't do anything funny on it.. we just sat on it. Over £200 for broken cupboard doors, Which again we didn't do anything weird to, we just opened the door. The whole house is falling apart tbh, the shower is dying too but at least she's not charging us for that. She's also charging us £150 for the washing machine and £150 for the cleaning.

She seems to have split the charges between the 3 rooms being used, but as we were all leaving another couple moved in to another room. They are the ones who broke the washing machine but we are being charged for it as they are not owning up. They don't seem to be splitting the bill and I'm not sure why...

I really don't know where we stand. Is it unfair to ask for the receipts for the repairs/cleaning? Is it worth it?

No idea about the shared house aspects of your situation, but exactly how was the washing machine broken? If it just broke down with somebody's wash inside it (as most washing machines do eventually) then surely it's up to the LL to repair/replace it? Our LL has never been the greatest when it comes to repairs but he didn't argue about replacing our washing machine when the old one broke down at the end of its life. He also recently footed the bill for repairing the new one when it stopped working for no apparent reason. It turned out that there was a sock stuck in one of the tubes - which certainly wasn't the LL's fault, but it's one of those things that falls to the LL's responsibility

The handle broke and someone's washing got stuck inside.
