I have just come off the phone after a twenty minute conversation with some poor man. The story is I live in Ireland currency Euro, pay visa Sterling via internet banking Bank of Ireland. My bank to do not make any charge for this service. I have recently being visa at a rate of £60 per week and they have taken a £2 charge. We were away recently and I was unable to make the weekly payment so mad a payment of £205 expecting a £2 charge but OH NO the amount credited was £198!!! so the poor chap got it both barrells and still could not give me the answer. He tried the 2.5% one but that doesn't add up. Why can I get no sense?? All I want to know is what charge to expect! Anayway manager going to call me back. God knows when:mad: Will update you, anyone else had the same experience, I cant be alone in this one.

A quick update, I could be wrong re visa. According to Global markets an itermediary bank could be making the charge, so I will come back and update again, hopefully this will explain the charges. I just want to know where my hard earned cash is going IYKWIM:cry:

For foreign currency payments, the banks at both sides can apply charges. Have saw this repeatedly with clients in Ireland. Had one client where we were paid exactly £7 short every month despite the fact they gave Bank of Ireland the correct instruction (but they didn't tick the box to accept "our" bank charges for the conversion).

After a year or so they finally started paying us from their Ulster Bank sterling account - which would have been so much easier in the first place :)

Thanks Cannyjock, I have since found out that it would be an itermediary bank charge, kinda dont mind paying a charge just want to know what the charge will be in advance. Didnt want to go to the trouble of opening another account and wouldnt be sure how to go about getting a sterling account in the republic. Have a phone no for global markets but havent got through yet, they should be able to let me know which is the intermediary bank and then maybe I will be able to find out the charges.
A couple of years back the charge was a flat £12 fee which was extortionate so I just got a bank draft and posted that. So thought I was onto an easier way avoiding the postage and draft fee and of course the 30 mile round trip to the bank. Seemed the cheaper option now the fee was reduced to £2. Anyway will let you know if I get any more joy today, and thanks for your input. Have calmed down a bit now:eek:
