GioInternet's Xmas 'Legal Action' Gift

Hi Martin,
Here is a diabolical situation that I'm sure you would like to know about, relating to Gio Internet and GIO Debt Collection Agents / Westcot Credit Services Ltd.
Apparently several hundred folk have received a most threatening Debt Collection Notice with threats of legal action OR PERSONAL VISITS by Debt Collectors IF satisfactory settlement is not received by 3rd January 2005.
Most of the billing supposedly relates to services cancelled some two years ago / And NOT disconnected by GIO / with Clients continuing to use the services without further payment (???) (Gio's statement )
No details are given of the DEBT other than a monetary figure of an outstanding balanced owed (??)
Calls to Westcot do not present any further information other than "you must call GIO (premium rate number) if you dispute the amount claimed"
Many further variations on this theme emerge in the 290 plus postings in past two days on the
https://www.ispreview.co.uk forum for Gio Internet.
The Westcot Credit Services Ltd Notices are dated 20th December 2004.
Below is a copy of my posting a short time ago on the Net4Nowt Forum
for DialUp and Broadband threads:

Martin, reading the threads, it is obvious that this Notice has put many Folk into a state of shock particularly at Xmas time - some posts, particularly from the young person who used Grandmother's phone for GIO access in the distant past and Grandmother's distress at receiving a bill for over £800 this Xmas Eve does not bear thinking about !

Xmas Greetings from GIO Internet & Westcot Debt Collection Agents...
Those receiving the infamous Court Action & Debt Collecters visiting THREATS from Westcot acting for Gio Internet, will find several hundred posts during the past two days on this link:
http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?t=17263
Action is being galvanised with Trading Standards Offices / BBC Watchdog / Martins Money Site and various other sources
Amounts claimed vary from £30 odd to over £800 - many claims are for services rendered to Folk who have only made enquiries to Gio in the past two years, many folk who subscribed and afterwards cancelled due to poor service / non-connections / impossibility of contacting Gio / non-answering of emails, etc.
Many are now accused of having continued using Gio's service during the past two years after cancellation and Gio's accounts dept has only just 'discovered this error'.
Incidentally, this is not a posting from an 'Anti-Giophile'
I have been a subscriber off & on with Gio for about five years and have made many forum postings in their defence over the years - subsequently suffering much
'stick' from disgruntled Gio clientel on various forums.

i spent most of my christmas worried about this, the threads above really helped. i cancelled giointernet in 2002 by recorded delivery to the address on their website, as with many other peoples attempts to cancel it turns out they had the address wrong so in effect gio are claiming they never recieved any cancellation notice.
this is a total scandal and gio need to withdraw all these debt collection notices.0 -
Having seen the chat on the other forums, why am i not surprised by the use of 0870 and 0871 number by both the debt collection agency and Gio Internet?? They must be on a nice little earner there.0

I know someone who has a Gio dial up service. They havent been able to connect for about 6 months and havent paid either because luckily they had their switch card stolen at the same time which causes the monthly fee to return unpaid.
They recently had an email from Hakua (sp?) saying they owe £80+
What should they do? Ringing Gio is a waste of time because no one ever answers the phone.0 -
For anyone that received this letter, it looks like there is a light at the end of the tunnel for you.
Have a read of this.........
