New TV

Options
Hell right I'll explain something, I've been wondering whether or not to get a warranty for a tv I will be purchasing soon.

I've heard about this SOGA 6 years malarky.

Basically I'll be spending £2600 on this TV, if it breaks down in 4 years do I have a say in? Or have I misunderstood it? If I have should I get a warranty?

Please advise, but please don't copy the law bits, simple english would be great :):money:

  • If you are spending 3k on a TV some sort of warranty/insurance is advised as the SOGA can be subjective

As for your question, if it breaks in 4 years, generally what you would have to do is to get an engineer's report to say that it's not a result of misuse, and is due to a manufacturing defect, and that you could reasonably expect it to last longer (the last part not being too difficult for a TV of that price). Then you give that to the retailer who would probably repair, but may also consider replacing or giving you a partial refund.

I would say getting an extra warranty/insurance/service agreement is a good idea. It's less hassle, and a £2600 TV is not the sort of thing you want to accidentally knock off the stand without some sort of insurance.

In my experience most retailers will pay a percentage of the repair cost between year 2 & 6 but will only repair free of charge or replace during the manufactureres gurantee period. I'd buy a warranty on a TV of that price (but do haggle for a deal as retailers have extended warranty targets to meet and will do deals to close a sale)

Remember them £10k plasma TV's, the ones you can now buy for £700?

How about leaving this purchase for a while till the sales come around and the price has dropped and buying it then for £1000-1500?

I can't leave it longer as my old Sagem DLP broke, and I've been about 2 months without a TV wahh.

Okay so best bet is if I haggle, I've never haggled before, any pointers. I understand If I pay in cash I have more chance of a good haggle, but won't have that much cash

I really don't think cash will help. I can't speak for independents, but whatever way you pay with us, the price is the same. In fact, it probably costs us more to process cash!
