Today they've sent a letter saying they won't accept responsibility - didn't take long for them to decide that!

That is standard - I bet they also put "Without Prejudice" at the top of the letter? :rotfl:

Suggest you get an opinion from a local carpet cleaning agency and ask for a written statement that the damage to your carpets has been caused by the Rug Doctor machine. You can then look to make a court claim (small claims) against them.

If you have home insurance you may be able to contact their legal helpline (many policies allow you to use this even if you didn't take out the optional legal cover) for advice.

I will ask the company coming around for their opinion but tbh it will cost me more than it's worth to make a claim against them. If my carpets come up OK next week when they are cleaned then I reckon i've been lucky. If they had to cough up the cost of cleaning then it would only be £35, and I do feel they will be able to clean it as I removed a few marks with carpet cleaner. In a fair world then yes, they should have to pay up but no -one admits responsibility for anything these days!

BTW i noticed on my home insurance that they won't cover items with damage caused when they are being cleaned, and yes, the letter from RD said WITHOUT PREJUDICE.

It would be £35 plus the cost of issuing the claim (~£30 from memory). You'd need to note Rug Doctor's T&Cs on the contract although whatever they say, they can not deny you your statutory rights (i.e. products/services must be of satisfactory quality, etc.).
