Debit card - email authorisation?

Hi all, can't find this topic anywhere on the forum...
I booked a holiday a few months back and realised about a fortnight before travelling I hadn't booked transfers to the hotel from the airport. I tried to ring the holiday operator customer services (on their high cost 0871 number - no alternative on saynoto0870.com sadly) three times and each time was put on hold for 15 mins before I gave up waiting. Instead I sent an email and asked them to add the transfers to the booking and charge my card, as an advisor on their (24-hour! free!) BOOKINGS line advised me, but assured me they'd ring me to confirm before processing it, as these days this is what they have to legally do.
Does anyone know if this this correct?
...because 48 hours before booking I still hadn't heard back, and my backup option (booking the transfers through a third party) required 48 hours' notice. As I hadn't heard from the holiday operator, I booked with my third party. Then I get home from work today to find a booking confirmation as a result of the original email I sent to the holiday operator - I now have booked (and presumably paid for?) two transfers!
Do I have any comeback as I was not telephoned to ask my permission as I was assured would be the case? After my rant at some poor chap on the bookings line I wouldn't hang up until he promised to make sure cust. services rang me back first thing tomorrow - I fly out tomorrow (Weds) night!
If anyone has any advice on what I can say to argue my case and get my £50 back it would be much appreciated!
