Stop credit card payments

I have had a bad experience with a car hire company in france. Two cars with same bad problem - had to spend day of holiday getting car to a garage, waiting to be taken to another town by taxi to collect third rental car which was OK etc. etc. The payment through Easycar has already gone through my credit card for the initial car rental via internet site. I don't want to be charged for additional petrol costs or any costs relating to repairing of two brand new VW Polos which both had the same alternator problem and basically the company must have bought some dodgy new cars to hire out (the vw garage I took the 2nd car to did a diagnostic test and told me not to touch the car, not to go anywhere in it and hence I had to wait for the taxi to take me to collect 3rd car which was from an Avis rental place - very reliable). I have given the care rental outlet at La Rochelle airport my details for the initial "deposit" - I am now worried they may take any charges they want. The credit card company (my bank) say they can't stop payments so I am thinking I could claim that I have lost my card and have it stopped - would any of you out there know if this is feasible and legal and possible etc etc. It certainly ruined my 8 day holiday having to spend 5 of them with two dodgy cars, sorting it myself and having the worry of any extra costs etc etc. Cheers

If they were some problems with the cars you rented and it is no fault of your own, then you have nothing to fear, but they are allowed to recover cost of petrol that you have been using but that also depends on the type of hire agreement you had with them.

Unfortunately even if you cancel the card, the card company will make the payment. So that is not going to stop the payments. However, once the transactions appear in your statement you can dispute the specific transactions (if £100+) to ask for a refund.
