I had a virgin card that I balance transfered to and it has now been paid off so balance is nil and I cut the card up, although account is still open. How long ago did you pay off the Virgin card? I got a BT from them in March, after paying off my previous balance last summer. I got the 0% for 16 months deal from them. They may be worth a try.

Call customer loyalty on 0800 783 1116 during office hours and see what they can do for you.

I've enjoyed an almost continuous 4 years of 0%/0.9% BT's with them. Disclaimer: Prior to the credit crunch we have now!

Do you have old statements for these cards you've cut up and not closed? Am curious why you didn't call to close your account when you'd cleared the balances if you no longer needed the cards?

Hi Canny, The last statements came through Just after I paid off the balances and both showed zero balances, so they went in the shredder, they were on 0% deals and i paid them off with a few months of the 0% period to spare on each. I cut the cards up so I wouldn't spend on them but I never got round to closing the accounts, should I have done?

I would have. Otherwise it sits on your credit report taking up available credit that can be used for other things. I'd say in the current climate there's also a chance it'll affect the credit limit you'll be offered on any new cards to move your Barclaycard balance to.

If you had your card numbers for the Virgin and M&S cards, you could phone them, ask if they have any 0% offers to transfer your Barclaycard balance to - and if they say no, then you can ask to close your account which might allow their closure teams to make you a better offer to retain you as a customer.

Without the card numbers, you'll need to write to them and ask them to close any and all accounts in your name registered at your address, explaining you no longer have the account numbers.

If you haven't already, take a look at your credit report to check for any other "dormant" accounts :)

EDIT: But to answer your OP, for a new 0% transfer card, I'd go for one of the RBS backed cards or Halifax. I've always had decent limits with them. Full list of cards on stoozing site at http://www.stoozing.com/0fees.php (supported by MSE).

This is good advice, but you should be able to do this even without the physical cards. Just call them up and say that you are looking to close the account down, but do not have the card to hand. They should be able to track you down using your name, address and other security related questions.
