Home Insurance for Non-Standard Construction

Options
I live in a house which was orignally 2 farm-workers' cottages made of clay lump (built around 200 years ago) which is similar to cob. It has also had several extensions added on which are all made of standard brick construction and the whole roof is tiled. The clay lump parts are now less than 50% of the overall building.

I'd like to use one of the on-line sites to compare loads of different insurers rather than ring/contact then individually, but wonder where I stand in terms of stating what the construction is? Can I just say it's standard construction as less than half is clay lump and it all has a standard roof? Can any of you clever insurance people tell me what the policy is with regards the percentage of non-standard? I really don't want to have to ring a whole load of companies and answer the same billion questions several times .

Thanks in advance for any help!

It is non standard construction so you have to declare it.

I would suggest you try either a local broker who will probably quote Norwich Unions Home Plus Policy or try NFU.

If you are a high net customer eg you have contents of more than say £60000 then post back up here as there are other Insurers who will quote

Unfortunately I just had a VERY bad experience with my Post Office car insurance so will not be touching them with a barge pole for my home insurance ... shame!!

I would avoid the post office and their ilk on a non standard property such as yours, it is important that it is insured correctly and for the correct amount. Hence I would recommend a local broker (You may also find they have experience of covering properties of this type of construction if they are common in your area) or the NFU as they obviously have a lot of experience in covering farm buildings
