when you say that you can't access recovery console what happens?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

There is a microsoft knowledge base artice on what to do in this situation, but I haven't been able to find it sofar,, still looking..
The idea is that you boot from the CD, recovery console, and manually replace the registry etc. from system restore points.
If you could do that, it would probably work, but you need to get into recovery console, and would need to have system restore enabled before the crash...
Could you elaborate on the "does not work" for safe mode, rec console etc..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Just reinstall XP. See How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP.0

Safe mode returns the PC to the blue screen.
If I press F8 on start up and select last known good configuration then it returns to the blue screen.
If I have the XP disc in and then start up and press F12 and then select boot from CD drive it goes to a Windows Set Up screen and shows various files loading up. I then get a screen saying Welcome to Set Up. I can either set up windows XP now, repair an installation using Recovery Console or quit. If I select recovery console I get the pages shown on electrons link however I get about half way through the instructions and the commands stop working.0 -
Did you try the chkdsk c: /p /r in recovery console? (Boot from the XP CD and select recovery console)
Or copying the old registry back over the current one?

I'm going to call it a night and have a go again tomorrow night after work.
A big Thank You for everyones time and effort tonight. I really appreciate it!0 -
You need to do a repair installation by booting from the XP CD. This does not use the recovery console, it just re-installs your Windows system files leaving your applications and data files untouched.
Follow the instructions in the link in Chippy's post # 24 and the first link in Albert's post # 25.

We had exactly the same thing happen to our laptop last night, I could not get rid of the blue screen with message, what I did in the end was I press the laptop on button down for around 8-10 secs and it went, this morning my son has switched it on again and it is fine.
Hope that works for you0 -
